Natwest GetCash: Are phones set to replace bank cards?

By Laura L Pollard

Over the last few decades technology has become a huge part of our lives and today we use it more than ever. We now use technology when we do shopping, communicate with people, travel and even develop our careers. There are constantly new technologies being created which make our lives simpler and one of the latest allows us to access our money like we were never able to previously.

Natwest customers will be the first people to enjoy the benefits of withdrawing their money without even having to use their bank card. The new system is simply named 'GetCash' and Natwest will be working alongside RBS to make it as successful and as effective as possible. There are numerous ways which the new system will help people but it also provides a hint as to what banks are planning for the future of banking.

GetCash will allow Natwest customers to send a six digit code either to themselves or to someone else. This code can then be entered into a cash machine owned by either Natwest or RBS allowing the person entering the code to withdraw a pre-set amount of money. GetCash can be used numerous times in a day and for transactions of any amount in of course multiples of ten.

The withdrawal limit for a single transaction using GetCash will initially be 100 but there is a possibility that this will increase once the system has been in place for a while. Customers will be able to use the system to send money to anyone they want to such as their children, partners or even to pay for services such as a tradesperson. This will not only make sending money far easier but it could also help to get family members out of trouble if they ever get stuck.

The GetCash system will also help people overcome the issue of not having money when cards are lost. Instead they will be able to send themselves a code and withdraw money until their replacement bank card arrives.
