Foam Roof Recoating And Information

By Jamie Thompson

The roof of your home protects it from a number of environmental factors. This includes rain, hail, wind, snow and more. Without a roof a house would be exposed to the elements. It is so important, in fact, that a big part of homeowner's insurance covers it. It must be taken care of, including repairs and possible roof recoating if called for.

There are many types of recoating that can be done. The type of coating and thickness are very important and depend on whether you use shingles or not. Shingles act as a first line of defense with the coating underneath as a weatherproof barrier. Some shingles are more for decoration or show rather than defense, but they still act in that capacity.

A flat roof is an example of a home type that would not have shingles. That means it would likely need a thicker coat of roofing materials compared to one that does have shingles on it. Of course, this means more work because they have to be removed before any other substances can be used. They can be put back on or new ones can replace them if the old ones have any type of damage from wind, hail or other weather conditions.

When choosing a coating substance, it is important to look through all the possibilities. Though many homeowners often go with the same substance that was already on there, advances in the industry could provide a better alternative. For example, many roofers are using what is referred to as 'cool' roofing.

If you use cool roofing materials, this means that they don't absorb as much sunlight. Absorbed sunlight will eventually seep down into the home, which means more electricity used to cool the house in warm months. If a the materials are more reflective, less heat gets in and the home becomes much more energy efficient. This saves you money and increases the resale value of the home should you want to sell.

Asphalt and tar pitch are by far the most popular coatings. They are used by mopping or otherwise spreading the substance across the surface after it been mixed and heated. They then dry and should be ready to be covered in shingles, if you desire. They are great for hot climates because they can expand in the heat and still go back to their original shape without cracking and letting moisture seep in.

A great newer type of roofing material is foam. It is usually made of polyurethane or something similar. It is fairly inexpensive, dries quickly and protects the inside of the house from weather elements. It is completely waterproof and helps keep electric bills down because it radiates instead of absorbs the heat.

No matter if there are shingles or what materials you use, roof recoating is a good investment in the future and overall safety of your home. Some insurers may also give a discount for doing a full recoat project, so keep that in mind as well. Not only does it extend the life of your home, the right coating may also add to the beauty as well.
